Welcoming Our Newest Learners

This fall, we are pleased to welcome two new social impact thought leaders to our community. Our Learners in Residence program, launched in 2020, is an 18-month residence that provides time, space and resources for social impact thought leaders to develop new ways to engage and shift narrative in their respective fields. We can’t wait to see how these individuals’ work improves their movements and leads to sustainable progress.

The Transformative Potential of Cooperative Models

Dr. Andre M. Perry is a senior fellow and director of the Center for Community Uplift at the Brookings Institution. He is also a professor of practice of economics at Washington University in St. Louis. A nationally known commentator on race, structural inequality, and education, Perry is the author of the book Black Power Scorecard: Measuring the Racial Gap and What We Can Do to Close It. Perry’s asset-valuation work informs policy debates and guides equitable, asset-focused development for communities nationwide.

As a Learner, Perry will advance the national conversation on how cooperative models can transform local economies and neighborhoods through a publicly available report and podcast series. His work will demonstrate the potential of shared equity models to boost economic activity, raise median wealth, and strengthen social cohesion, translating these insights
into actionable recommendations for practitioners, funders, and policy makers.

Embracing the Financial Power of Women

Arani Kajenthira is an investment leader and strategic advisor who believes in the power of capital to drive both financial returns and meaningful change. Within this, her particular focus is on inspiring women and newer wealth holders to engage in investing to help shape a more inclusive economy.

Between 2020 and 2040, over $100 trillion USD will be transferred between generations, and a majority of that wealth will end up in the hands of women. For Arani’s Learners in Residence project, she plans to share the historical context for this tremendous shift, aggregate personal stories to help women understand how they relate to money and illustrate how women are overcoming roadblocks and creating change by embracing their financial power.
